This is a live edge cherry board that was purchased from a local mill in my town. I took my son with me and we looked at a variety of boards and this one was hiding under some other slabs of wood. It was weathered and I had a feeling about it and really liked the curve of the board and cut off branch extensions. Planing it revealed a fabulous grain pattern and color variation in the rings. This board made me extremely happy that I trusted my gut about it. It is one of two boards from the same slab. It is approximately 7” wide , x 23” long x ¾” thick.
The Selection
All of my wood is either reclaimed or purchased through local mills. Each piece of wood is inspected by me and I personally look for unique boards with character. I love boards that have fun unique grain patterns and wonky shapes. I feel like these boards truly make the board special and one of a kind.
The Process
Before sanding, the board is de-barked to expose the beautiful live edge. Afterwards, the board is run through the planer to popular make it flat. Any imperfections like cracks or holes are filled with either the saw dust from the board mixed with Titebond III or coffee grounds mixed with Titebond III The board is then sanded with 100 grit, then 150 grit until smooth, and then sprayed with water to raise the grain. Once the board dries, it is sanded again with 150 grit, then 220 grit until smooth, and sprayed with water to raise the grain once more. When it dries again, the final sanding is with 220 grit and 600 grit for a smooth glossy sanded finish.
Once the sanding is done, the board is rubbed with a generous amount of food safe mineral oil and left overnight to soak in. The board is then rubbed with my own homemade wood butter which is made with food safe mineral oil and carnauba wax. The wood butter is left on the board overnight to soak in and harden. The wood butter is then buffed out into the wood with a terry cloth to create a beautiful final finish. All boards are finished off with ½” rubber feet.
