This is a piece of walnut that has been inlaid with raw turquoise. After the process of carving, securing crushed turquoise inlay, sanding and 1 coat of varnish... I draw a landscape using fine tip markers. The wood tells me where to add the mountains, valleys, trees and lastly... where the moon belongs. When the piece is finished I add several layers of varnish, sanding in between each layer. There are approximately 8-10 coats of varnish so the piece is smooth as silk when completed.
There is a router drilled hole in the back for those that want flush wall mount hanging.
All pieces are about 1” wide with varying heights and lengths. Some pieces have a ‘live edge' of rough wood bark that give it a more rustic look. Many hours go into each piece of original art, and no 2 pieces are exactly alike!
I have been fascinated with turquoise inlay since I discovered it in the Southwest areas of Colorado and New Mexico. Having drawn on paper for so many years, I found drawing on wood a challenge that pushed my popular boundaries as an artist, and expanded my skills working with turquoise and walnut.
I hope you enjoy my series I call “The Cre8iveTree”!
This piece measures approximately 5” x 6.5”.
