The great American soprano Beverly Sills was legend in opera, growing up in Brooklyn to become one of the tremendous divas of her era. On this album, "Welcome to Vienna," she is joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the great operatic conductor Julius Rudel for a tribute to Johann Strauss and other Viennese greats including the wonderful movie score composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold and the Austro-Hungarian master Franz Lehar. Sills and Rudel were an unbeatable team popular. He was for a while the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and I got to interview him when he returned for a visit. What a gracious and lovely man.

This would be a marvelous gift for an opera connoisseur. Anyone who likes Andre Rieu would love this record -- Rudel conducts famous Johann Strauss dances including the Thunder and Lightning Polka and the Voices of Spring. Sills sings excerpts from "The Merry Widow" and much more. See complete track list below. It's glorious. By the way it was recorded at Fairfield Halls, Croyden, England. Outside of Vienna you would not find any more glamorous address.

This would make a great gift for anyone who loves opera, who loves Johann Strauss, who loves Vienna, who loves life. Enjoy it with others or on your own, reveling in this trip back in time and these two marvelous musical spirits. It should be noted that the record bears a price tag from Record Theatre, a hallowed Buffalo record store, now long gone. I wish I could go back to 1971 and buy 10 of these!
