Substantial, artisan, open-work, silver brooch. A human figure, in a frame. Partially textured and oxidized. Ragnar Skalstad, Oslo, Norway. Ca 1960 s. Inspired by The Thinker (French: Le Penseur) by Auguste Rodin?

No marks. Acid tested as silver, both by us and by the previous owner (who works in a jeweler shop). A collector friend has the same brooch, but stamped. If desired, we can ask her for a photo of the stamps and send it by email.

Goldsmith and designer Ragnar Skalstad (1923-2001) started his training at the J. Tostrup company, Oslo, Norway in 1945. He worked for several jeweler companies in Denmark and Sweden, and later for the David-Andersen company in Oslo. Tostrup and David-Andersen are internationally renowned for high quality design and craftsmanship.

Skalstad started his own workshop in 1953, and later opened a jeweler's shop. The business was closed down in 1990.

The sculptural, organic style of the piece is typical for this designer. Skalstad´s jewelry is sought after among collectors of Scandinavian modernist jewelry.
