I find a lot of ultra suede at thrift stores, with a small piece cut out, then abandoned. It is soft and color-rich, but a little bit boring compared to a patchwork rug. I wanted to jazz it up, and experimented with some twisted Shaker insets, and twill weaving bands. (The blue has a touch of green, not quite teal, but not exactly navy).
WARP: Cotton warping thread in whites.
FINISH: End warp and hand-tied fringe, because it looks better and lasts longer. Washed by hand, sun-dried.
CARE: The rug is reversible, hand-washable in cool water, and should be laid flat to dry, not put in the dryer.
READY TO SHIP: the rug in the photograph is the actual rug you popular receive when purchased.
DIMENSIONS: 22" x 27" plus fringe, 1/4" thick
I began making handmade rag rugs as a way to use up leftover and unloved fabric. As I studied rug making, it became a way to learn and preserve an art developed by frontier women who made-do by repurposing clothes, linens and curtains. I respect the artistry and talent of those rural women who lived a hard, duty-filled life and yet saw and created beauty every day. I aspire to their skill and values using the same patchwork style and traditional techniques.
Rag Rug Materials: the wool, denim and cotton used in my rugs is repurposed or rescued from unloved pile in fabric shops, stashes from estates, thrift shops, and auctions, and pieces purchased by crafters in enthusiasm and never finished.
