Uncut 1890s Size 10 Years Chest 26 Inches Boys popular Bosom Shirt Cosmopolitan 914 Vintage Sewing Pattern Antique Formal Dress

A Cosmopolitan Fashion Model Co. 914....a Boys Bosom Shirt Antique Sewing Pattern in 10 Years, Breast 26 inches.

The unprinted pattern is uncut and in original folds. The limited instructions are on the envelope. The envelope is in good antique condition with wear, tanning, side split and tiny tears. The envelope flap is a fragment, not attached to the envelope but the fragment is attached to the pattern. Although the 1899 Spring/Summer Cosmopolitan counter book shows the pattern as 1899, the pattern may have been available for a few years prior and/or after that year.

This pattern has the envelope flap adhering to the pattern and Charlotte addressed that below.

Cosmopolitan patterns are made without a seam allowance. The 19th century seamstress would have placed the pattern pieces on the fabric and marked a solid line around them with tailor's chalk, soap, or a soft pencil. She would then cut outside her line to add the seam allowances. Because the actual stitching line has been traced in chalk, the seam allowances can be cut by eye as the stitching line is there to be followed. Or the seam allowance could be measured out and marked to use for the cutting line. Cosmopolitan did it this way so that the seamstress could add different seam allowances for different parts of the garment.

This pattern is from a stash of unused, old store stock inventory of the Campbell, Sprague & Company General Merchandise store. This establishment was in continuous operation from 1820 – 1950, and was located in the small town of Roscoe, New York. All of these patterns appear in the 1899 Spring/Summer Cosmopolitan Patterns counter book. Many of the patterns have the envelope flap adhered to the tissue pattern.

If that has happened, here is what you will need to know in order to use the pattern:
You will need to carefully slice open each short end of the envelope, which will allow the envelope to unfold accordion-style. You should then trim away the unattached portion of the flap from the tissue pattern. This will leave a small portion of the flap on the tissue (which will not interfere with using the tissue). Steaming the flap loose is not recommended.
