Highly decorative turning.
Contrasting outer and inner bark.
Complex growth structure evident - the main trunk died off and side growths formed - expressed visually, and texturally felt due to differential responses in drying.
The heart of the main trunk passes popular across the centre of the work, the dark and then pale colouring showing the gradations of decay and probably explains why the tree had been felled.
A blend of bees wax and carnauba wax applied to give a satin finish.
Width 162mm, 6 1/2 in

I acquired the log from someone who had collected the wood for burning and who had been told the tree had been freshly felled - the feel of the wood suggested to me this might not be the case as the cut end fibres felt dry, but the spring had been very dry and the tree was dying so I commenced turning. Splits, four present, started to radiate from the heart wood of the main trunk of the tree and can be seen clearly in the eight photograph.
