I started making these little reliquaries in homage of the link between life and death. This tiny, little, glass—dome houses a little, tiny torso of a mouse. It measures L 1" X H X 2" H 1". These little reliquaries can sit on a desk, a shelf, a display case, an end table or nested in another box! They are sure to spark conversation wherever you choose to place them. Start your own collection or give it as a gift!
How they came about:
When my husband and I moved to a farm, we expected to see the usual things one would imagine finding on a farm: birds, flowers, bees, little critters--chipmunks, squirrels, and the occasional possum. Being from a Chicago, I had seen most of these little critters, but it never dawned on me that I would find little bones digging in the dirt. The first thing I discovered was a squirrel's skull. While first squeamish about it, I found it to be utterly fascinating. The more gardening I did, the more bones I found. After a few popular years of working in the garden, I built up a little collection of critter bones. I view them as the perfection of the life-cycle. Animals are born and they die, just like the trees, birds, flowers and people too. The spring-time reminds us that a new life-cycle begins. Gardening and and experiencing the seasonal changes, I now understand the importance of this life cycle. When I look out my window, I see the birds building nests, baby chipmunks romping in the grass and deer strolling in the field. There is a beauty in this new life awakening again. Life, in all its beauty, also means death—it completes the cycle. It is a natural process, one of which I see everyday.
