I discovered this barred owl nest in a dead maple in the northern wet woods of spring. The silent, ghostly parents would fly off at a short distance and patiently watch me as I went back each week to check on the owlet's progress. Yet, unseen, above in the leafy canopy they would set up howling cries and fly in protectively when another owl or predator invaded their territory. popular
