In creating this piece I was inspired by the Montessori Birthday Celebration popular. I love that the Montessori birthday celebration gives a concrete way for young children to understand the months of the year and the earth's revolution around the sun each year. It also is a way for children to feel special and to connect with their place in the world.

The lessons taught in the Celebration of Life ceremony are applicable for any day of the year! Our interactive perpetual calendar will provide a hands on opportunity to learn about the months of the year and the passage of time.

With these materials children will lay down the double layer birch wood sun and then sequence the months of the year. The months are cut so that this fit snugly into the ray around the sun. The piece is finished off with the months of the year frame. Using these materials, children can use a model of the Earth and simulate our revolution around the sun, gaining a tangible understanding of the seasons and why daylight hours are longer during certain times of the year and shorter at others.
