Popular Marebu (Woven Mat) Design by Injalak Ladies on linen

2m of hand screen printed "Tuscany" linen (138cm wide).
This linen base cloth is a beige/natural colour and is around 210 gsm in weight. It has good body, soft finish and also drapes well.
The print has been created with one screen, the ink is a bright yellow.

All our fabrics are designed and hand-printed by our members (Aboriginal artists) in our workshop in Gunbalanya in West Arnhem Land, NT, Australia.

This design was created by three talented Kunwinjku daluk (women) who are also accomplished fibre artists. They participated in a series of fabric design and printing workshops in 2013-16. The result was a suite of stunning collaborative designs inspired by their natural environment popular and cultural heritage.

Marebu (woven mats) 2015
Marebu were traditionally valuable items made by women. They were made in a variety of shapes and had many uses including: being worn, used as surfaces for food preparation and used during ceremonies. Children could sleep on them or be rolled up in them and carried, especially during yekke (the cold season in June/July). Priscilla Badari explains that people were originally inspired to make round mats by the shape of the moon. This design was based on real examples of woven Pandanus spiralus marebu at Injalak Arts with all their variety of pattern and weaving techniques. It is a vibrant design that expresses the women's love for their cultural heritage and their desire to extend it to new media.
