Vintage 60s slim wayfarer design glasses popular by Hadley. NOS Honey acetate optical frames. Prescription NHS 524 eyeglasses. RX spectacles. Unused
Original 60s version of the 524 model glasses produced for the NHS. Essentially a slimmer version of the wayfarer style that has become perhaps the most generally used and recognised eyewear design of all time. This is partly due to the efforts of the NHS in the UK to boost the standard of eye care health after the devastation of WW2. The result was the universal adoption of this shape by vast sections of society of all age groups. This is why their sizes vary so much. This pair are a mens small / womens medium. There were a handful of options available from the NHS but this 524 proved the most popular and has generated a unique glow of nostalgia for these humble glasses which has only grown stronger in the 35 years since the scheme was discontinued.
We reckon it is needs no stretch of imagination to declare that they are also a very close match for the iconic James Dean glasses. Not just because of the shape but the fact that his pair were deliberately a little bit small for his face. So if you are a man searching for that look, they may be appropriate.
Also they are the precise article worn by Morrissey at the height of his status in the 80s. That is to say, if a waxwork museum were to create the definitive version of him for display, the curators would be contacting someone like me and asking, have you got a pair of these. We'd say yes, here they are.
The best and most accurate image we've seen of them is here https://www.pinterest.com/pin/472174342174020557/
This 60s version has a superior standard of production to those made in the following decades and in this case the quality is surprisingly impressive. popular Made by British firm Hadley they still have the original label inside. This doesn't make sense of them having a prescription installed, but it was presumably an order that was never collected. They are also a lighter honey tone than most that we've come across.
Comes with prescription lenses which must be replaced with your own prescription.
We have released a substantial selection of these particular glasses from our archive which are worth comparing to find your correct size.
