The 'aesthetic movement' was a late nineteenth century following that championed pure beauty and "art for art's sake", emphasizing the visual and sensual qualities of art and design over practical, moral or narrative considerations. The aesthetic movement flourished in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s and was important equally in fine and applied arts, including jewelry. This period was inspired by simple naturalistic asymmetrical themes.... birds, leaves and sometimes Japanese-style elements. This particular popular brooch was crafted in sterling silver around 1870, and features a waved border around beautiful aesthetic themes...hand etched branch and pond life patterns that house applied rose and yellow gold birds. Such a pretty old treasure, still wearable today...
