First paperback edition, the rare unauthorized “pirate” edition of The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (Ace, 1965). A very rare copy, published without the author or original publisher's permission and swiftly removed from the shelves. The iconic “pirate” or “lawsuit” edition, released before the authorized Ballantine edition. Book one in the high fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings. Quite a well-preserved copy. Some mild rubbing to covers and shelf wear around the edges. Corners bumped and with some creases. Small tear to fore edge of front cover and first three pages. Binding glue is visible in gutter between front cover and first page and spine leans slightly, but binding remains quite strong on the whole and the spine is without reading creases.
