The Durrow Plate, decorated with rich enamels and 22 carat gold is inspired one of the earliest and finest of the Celtic illuminated manuscripts.
This English collector's plate from 1975 was made by Spode ,manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent in England. It is Fine Bone China.
At the center of the plate is a wonderfully designed cross, taken from St. Mark's Gospel. Within 4 circles are the four Apostles: the lion, St. Mark: the calf, St. Luke: the eagle, St. John and the man, St. Matthew.
The edge of the plate has 4 horses and the gorgeous gold, with green, rust and yellow Celtic designs.
The name comes from the Columban Monastery of Durrow (Ireland) where the original manuscript of the Book of Durrow believed to have been written in 630 AD, was preserved until the 17th Century when it was moved to Trinity College in Dublin and where it can still be seen.
The Back of the plate has lots of information. The first word appears to be smeared, the other wording is clear.
