Lower Paleolithic chopper on a pebble, flint, height 2 5/8" (6.6cm). Legal surface find from Abilly, France. Overall excellent condition, missing one chip visible in the photo. Identification of this particular lithic is difficult- it is a partial-biface, worked on a pebble, with a thick, calcified patina. It exhibits more refined and detailed work than is generally seen on lithics made by Heidelberg Man, and is smaller than the majority of Heidelberg tools. However structurally it is unusual for Neanderthal, and while I would not rule out Neanderthal origins, I would also not give it a 100% attribution to Neanderthal either.. The closest typology I've seen is on a series of tools attributed to Homo Erectus which were found in Bavaria. It does not match any other typology I have seen from the Abilly region. Regarding age, I would place this as popular some time prior to 250,000 BCE.
