Abstract Minimalist Woven Cotton Throw Blanket - inspired by popular Fulani Blankets

Fula IV (dunes) is a linear-geometric, 100% cotton woven blanket. Black and colored lines traverse a field of earthtones, as nomads crossing the desert. Fula is an AfriMod blanket project inspired by the designs, colors and patterns of Fulani wedding blankets of the Sahel.

AfriMod Fula Project was inspired by the spectacular geometric and abstract motifs that adorn Fulani wedding blankets.

The design and weave of Fulani blankets is a uniquely Sahelian design style. It employs an intricate combination of centuries-old geometric and abstract motifs to result in elegant tapestries that are treasured and timeless. The range of design elements in Fulani culture include lines, spots, triangles, lozenges and popular chevrons with the occasional colorful pom-poms and tassels added as playful embellishments.

These beautifully crafted blankets are traditionally given as wedding presents or as part of traditional dowry during marriage celebrations and they are cherished as very important possessions of new brides.

At AfriMod, we extracted the core elements of Fulani design sensibilities. We paid attention to their use of lines, dots, triangles, lozenges, chevrons, colors, etc. We examined how they used geometric and abstract features as storytelling tools. And working with these elements, we focused on infusing the essence of Fulani exaltation of love and marriage into our cotton blanket designs.

AfriMod Woven Cotton Blankets

Our 100% cotton blankets are woven from raw thread, not printed like polyester blankets. The weaving technique utilizes solid colored yarn combined with black and white yarn to create the blanket image. Colors may appear more muted than shown in photos. Slight color variation between the product image shown and final printed product may be expected due to the variance in threads utilized in production.

These blankets include a 2” multicolor and black and white fringe. The texture is the same on the front and back, but the back is the color negative of the front image.

Care: machine wash blankets in cold water using mild detergent and gentle cycle only. Do not bleach or tumble dry.
